Homemade Herbal Remedies for Pets
Â
Just like you, your pet can get sick or injured. Here are 17 natural remedies for common issues your furry friend may encounter in daily life.

Repel Fleas with Lemon
Fleas don’t like lemon. To make your pet’s fur less appealing to fleas, rub a little freshly squeezed lemon juice onto their coat.
Brewer’s Yeast and Garlic
Mix some brewer’s yeast with garlic and add it to your dog’s daily food to help keep fleas away.
Important: For cats, use only brewer’s yeast—do not add garlic, as it may cause anemia.
Even Better: Water
As you might guess, fleas don’t get along well with water. Bathe your pet thoroughly and rinse as well as possible. Cat and dog shampoos can also be helpful.
Keep Fleas Away by Keeping Your Home Clean
Fleas have a harder time surviving in clean homes. Vacuum your pet’s favorite spots as often as possible. Wash their bedding regularly and clean the floors using a natural disinfectant.
Nematodes (Roundworms)
Nematodes sold at pet stores love to feed on flea larvae. By releasing these beneficial worms into your garden, you can help control the outdoor flea population.
Geranium Oil
Natural geranium oil can help remove ticks from dogs. Simply add a few drops to your dog’s collar.
Dress Your Dog in Pants if They Go into Bushes
To partially prevent fleas from climbing onto your dog’s body, you can dress them in old socks or the sleeves of a child’s sweatshirt.
Put on Their Boots
In winter, salt thrown on icy roads can harm your dog’s paws. To protect their feet during hikes or cold-weather walks, put dog boots on them.
Paw Care
After walking through thorny or rough terrain, check your dog’s paws for foreign objects. If there’s damage, gently wash the area and apply a soothing balm. If there’s light bleeding, apply an antibiotic ointment and gently bandage the paw.
Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is highly effective in treating skin irritations. Brew some chamomile tea, pour it into a spray bottle, and store it in the fridge. Spray directly onto your pet’s irritated skin.
Pamper Puppies with Vitamin E
Skin irritations on dogs heal much faster with the support of Vitamin E oil. Gently apply it to the affected areas.
Soothe Itching with Oatmeal
The sound of scratching from cats and dogs can sometimes drive their owners crazy. Blend plain oats into a powder, mix with a little water to form a paste, and apply it to the itchy area. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. You’ll see it works.
Quickly Rehydrate
Unflavored electrolyte drinks can help quickly restore hydration in pets experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. (Consult your veterinarian for the appropriate dosage.)
Soothe the Stomach
When pets take antibiotics, both harmful and beneficial bacteria in the gut can be destroyed, upsetting their stomach. A small serving of yogurt with dinner can help rebalance their digestion.
Compress for the Eyes
If your pet has discharge or irritation in the eyes, apply a warm chamomile tea bag as a compress. It will help soothe and calm the area.
