Description

Cinnamon Sticks
Scientific Name: Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon) / Cinnamomum cassia (Cassia cinnamon)

Warm, aromatic, and deeply comforting, cinnamon sticks are rolled pieces of dried inner bark from Cinnamomum trees. Prized for their sweet-spicy fragrance and long culinary history, they are used worldwide in both traditional cooking and herbal preparations.

Plant Description:
Cinnamon comes from evergreen trees in the laurel family (Lauraceae), native to South and Southeast Asia. The inner bark is carefully stripped, dried in thin layers, and naturally curls into quills (sticks) as it dries. Ceylon cinnamon forms thin, delicate layers, while cassia cinnamon forms thicker, harder rolls.

Traditional Uses:
Cinnamon has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Middle Eastern, and European culinary traditions. Cinnamon sticks have been steeped in teas, simmered in broths, and used in spice blends for their warming aroma and flavor.

Benefits:

  • Traditionally supports healthy digestion
  • Warming spice used in circulation-supporting traditions
  • Rich in antioxidant compounds
  • Supports metabolic balance in traditional dietary use
  • Aromatic ingredient used in teas and culinary blends
  • May support blood sugar balance in traditional use
  • Long history in global food and herbal traditions

Preparation Suggestions:
Cinnamon sticks can be simmered whole in water for 10–20 minutes to make tea or infused into coffee, cider, mulled wine (non-alcoholic versions included), soups, and stews. They are often reused multiple times for light infusions and pair well with ginger, cloves, citrus peel, and cardamom.

Cautions:
Cassia cinnamon contains higher levels of coumarin and should be used in moderation, especially for long-term daily use. Ceylon cinnamon is preferred for frequent consumption. Consult a healthcare provider if managing liver conditions or medication concerns.
