Description

Cinnamon
Scientific Name: Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon) / Cinnamomum cassia (Cassia cinnamon)

Warm, sweet, and aromatic, cinnamon is one of the world’s oldest and most widely used spices. Harvested from the inner bark of Cinnamomum trees, it has been treasured in culinary, cultural, and traditional herbal systems for thousands of years.

Plant Description:
Cinnamon comes from evergreen trees in the Lauraceae family, native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. The inner bark is carefully harvested, dried, and rolled into quills (sticks) or ground into powder. Ceylon cinnamon is lighter and more delicate, while cassia is darker, stronger, and more pungent.

Traditional Uses:
Cinnamon has been used since ancient Egypt, China, and India as both a spice and a traditional herbal ingredient. It has been included in tonics, teas, and culinary preparations for its warming properties and pleasant flavor. It is also widely used in festive and seasonal recipes worldwide.

Benefits:

  • Traditionally supports healthy digestion
  • Warming spice used in circulation-supporting traditions
  • Rich in antioxidant compounds (polyphenols)
  • Supports blood sugar balance in traditional dietary use
  • Aromatic spice used in culinary and herbal blends
  • May support metabolic function in traditional systems
  • Enhances flavor and warmth in foods and beverages

Preparation Suggestions:
Cinnamon can be used as sticks or powder. Add to teas, coffee, oatmeal, baked goods, smoothies, or savory dishes. To make tea, simmer a cinnamon stick or ½–1 teaspoon powder in hot water for 10–15 minutes. It pairs well with ginger, cloves, honey, and cardamom.

Cautions:
Cassia cinnamon contains higher levels of coumarin, which may not be suitable in large or long-term amounts for individuals with liver concerns. Use in moderation. Ceylon cinnamon is preferred for frequent use. Consult a healthcare provider if managing medical conditions.
