Description

Hops Flower Powder
Scientific Name: Humulus lupulus

Aromatic, slightly bitter, and deeply traditional, hops flower powder is made from finely milled dried strobiles (cones) of the hops plant. Best known for its role in brewing, hops also has a long history in European herbal traditions as a calming, sleep-supportive botanical.

Plant Description:
Hops is a fast-growing perennial climbing vine in the Cannabaceae family, native to Europe, Asia, and North America. It produces cone-like flowers (strobiles) that contain lupulin glands, which give hops their distinctive aroma and bitterness. These cones are harvested, dried, and ground into powder for herbal use.

Traditional Uses:
Hops have been used for centuries in European folk herbalism. Traditionally, they have been used in teas, pillows, and tinctures. Hop pillows were historically placed near beds to support restful sleep. In modern herbalism, hops are commonly included in calming and nighttime formulas.

Benefits:

  • Traditionally supports relaxation and restful sleep
  • Mild nervine herb used in calming herbal blends
  • Supports nervous system balance in folk herbal use
  • Contains bitter compounds and aromatic resins (lupulin)
  • Traditionally used in sleep pillows and evening teas
  • May support stress relief in traditional herbal systems
  • Widely used in calming and nighttime formulations

Preparation Suggestions:
Hops flower powder is typically used in small amounts due to its potency and bitterness. It can be added to capsules, blended into teas (often with chamomile or lemon balm), or infused into tinctures. A common use is ¼–½ teaspoon in calming evening blends.

Cautions:
May cause drowsiness; avoid use before driving or operating machinery. Not recommended during pregnancy. May interact with sedatives, alcohol, or CNS depressant medications. Use in moderation.
