Description

Osha Root
Scientific Name: Ligusticum porteri

Strong, aromatic, and deeply traditional, osha root is a powerful botanical long revered in Native American herbal practices of the Rocky Mountain and Southwestern regions. Harvested from the root of Ligusticum porteri, this plant is known for its warming, spicy aroma and its historical use in respiratory and seasonal wellness traditions.

Plant Description:
Osha is a perennial herb native to the high elevations of the Rocky Mountains and parts of northern Mexico. It typically grows in shaded, mountainous forest regions. The plant produces finely divided, parsley-like leaves and small clusters of white flowers. The root is dark brown on the outside and aromatic inside, with a distinct celery-like, spicy scent.

Traditional Uses:
Osha has been traditionally used by Indigenous peoples of North America for generations. It is often referred to as “bear root” in some traditions, as bears are observed digging it up and consuming it. It has historically been used in herbal preparations to support respiratory comfort, seasonal wellness, and throat soothing practices, including teas, tinctures, and chewed root applications.

Benefits:

  • Traditionally used to support respiratory comfort
  • May help soothe throat and seasonal irritation
  • Supports clear breathing and chest comfort
  • Warming aromatic herb used in traditional steam inhalations
  • Historically used for immune-supportive wellness practices
  • Supports seasonal resilience in traditional herbal systems
  • Strong aromatic root used in small, concentrated amounts

Preparation Suggestions:
Osha root is typically used as a tincture, decoction, or in very small amounts as a tea due to its potency. To prepare tea, simmer a small piece (or ¼–½ teaspoon dried root) in water for 10–15 minutes. It is also commonly used in steam inhalations or tincture blends with other respiratory herbs such as mullein, thyme, or licorice root.

Cautions:
Osha root is potent and should be used with respect and moderation. Not recommended during pregnancy. Due to its strength, long-term or high-dose use should be avoided unless supervised by a qualified practitioner. Individuals with plant allergies or sensitivities should use caution.
