Description

Boneset Herb

Scientific Name: Eupatorium perfoliatum L.
Family: Asteraceae (Daisy Family)

Boneset Herb has been treasured in North American herbal traditions for centuries. Native to the eastern United States and Canada, this hardy perennial has long been used by Indigenous peoples and later adopted by early American herbalists as a comforting herb during seasonal illnesses. Despite its name, Boneset does not “set” broken bones—the name comes from its historical use during illnesses that caused deep muscle and bone aches.

Plant Description

Boneset is an upright perennial that typically grows 2–5 feet tall. It features distinctive lance-shaped leaves that appear fused around the stem, giving the appearance that the stem grows through the leaf. During late summer, clusters of small white flowers bloom, attracting butterflies, bees, and other beneficial pollinators. The aerial parts of the plant are harvested while flowering and carefully dried for herbal use.
