Description
Pennyroyal
Scientific Name: Mentha pulegium
Strong, aromatic, and historically controversial, pennyroyal is a mint family herb known for its intense fragrance and long-standing but hazardous use in traditional folk practices. Harvested from the aerial parts of Mentha pulegium, this plant has been used cautiously throughout history for external applications and aromatic purposes, though it is now recognized as potentially toxic when misused.
Plant Description:
Pennyroyal is a low-growing perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Western Asia, and naturalized in some regions of North America. It produces small, oval leaves and whorls of tiny lilac to purple flowers. When crushed, the plant releases a very strong, minty, pungent aroma due to its high concentration of volatile oils.
Traditional Uses:
Historically, pennyroyal has been used in European and Middle Eastern folk traditions primarily as an aromatic herb and insect repellent. It was sometimes used in sachets, fumigations, and external preparations. However, many of its historical internal uses are now considered unsafe and are no longer recommended in modern herbal practice.
Benefits (Traditional & External Use Only):
- Traditionally used as an aromatic insect repellent
- Used in sachets and herbal fumigations for scenting spaces
- External aromatic herb in folk traditions
- Historically used in very small amounts in traditional systems (now discouraged)
- Strong mint-like aroma used in herbal blends for fragrance
Preparation Suggestions:
Pennyroyal is generally used only in external or aromatic applications such as dried sachets, potpourri, or historically in insect-repelling herbal bundles. It is not recommended for internal use. Modern herbal practice advises against ingestion or use in teas, tinctures, or concentrated extracts.
Cautions:
Pennyroyal is potentially toxic, especially in concentrated forms or essential oil. Internal use can cause serious adverse effects, including liver and nervous system toxicity. It is unsafe during pregnancy and may cause severe complications. Even external use should be approached with caution. Keep away from children and pets.
Disclaimer:
This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Pennyroyal is included for historical and educational purposes only. It is not safe for internal use. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any herb, and avoid use of pennyroyal except under professional guidance where appropriate.
