Description

Comfrey Leaf
Scientific Name: Symphytum officinale

Rich, traditional, and deeply regarded in folk herbalism, comfrey leaf is a well-known plant historically used for external applications. Harvested from the broad green leaves of Symphytum officinale, this perennial herb has long been associated with topical comfort and traditional wound-care preparations.

Plant Description:
Comfrey is a perennial herb in the Boraginaceae family, native to Europe and parts of Asia and naturalized in North America. It grows in moist soils and produces large, rough-textured, lance-shaped leaves along tall stems, with bell-shaped purple, blue, or cream flowers. The leaves are the primary part used in herbal preparations.

Traditional Uses:
Comfrey has been used for centuries in European folk herbalism. Traditionally known as “knitbone,” it was applied externally in poultices, salves, and compresses. It has historically been used in traditional herbal systems to support skin and external tissue comfort.

Benefits (External Use Only):

  • Traditionally used in external herbal preparations
  • Supports skin comfort in folk herbal use
  • Commonly used in salves, poultices, and compresses
  • Traditionally associated with soothing minor strains and bruising (external use)
  • Contains allantoin, a naturally occurring plant compound
  • Long history in European folk medicine
  • Supports external tissue comfort in traditional use

Preparation Suggestions:
Comfrey leaf is used externally only. It is commonly infused into oils for salves or used in poultices applied to intact skin. It should not be applied to open wounds or deep injuries. It is often blended with herbs like calendula, plantain, or arnica (external use only) in topical formulations.

Cautions:
Do not ingest—comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) that may be harmful to the liver if taken internally. External use should be limited to intact skin and preferably in PA-controlled formulations. Avoid use during pregnancy and nursing unless under professional supervision.
