Hops are the cone-shaped flowers of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus), commonly used as a key ingredient in brewing beer. Description

Hops
Scientific Name: Humulus lupulus

Aromatic, bitter, and traditionally calming, hops are the cone-like flowers of a vigorous climbing vine best known for their use in brewing beer. In herbal traditions, hops are also valued for their role in relaxation and nighttime wellness preparations.

Plant Description:
Hops is a perennial twining vine in the Cannabaceae family, native to Europe, Asia, and North America. It grows rapidly, climbing using rough stems and producing papery green cone-shaped flowers called strobiles. These cones contain resinous glands (lupulin) responsible for hops’ distinctive aroma and bitterness.

Traditional Uses:
Hops have been used for centuries in European herbalism. Historically, they were used in teas, tinctures, and even stuffed into sleep pillows for their soothing aroma. They have long been included in traditional evening formulas to support relaxation and restful sleep.

Benefits:

  • Traditionally supports relaxation and restful sleep
  • Mild nervine herb used in calming herbal traditions
  • Supports nervous system balance in folk herbal use
  • Contains bitter and aromatic compounds (lupulin)
  • Traditionally used in sleep pillows and nighttime teas
  • May support stress relief in traditional herbal systems
  • Commonly used in calming herbal blends

Preparation Suggestions:
Hops can be prepared as a tea by steeping 1–2 teaspoons of dried cones in hot water for 10–15 minutes. Because of their bitterness, they are often blended with chamomile, lemon balm, or passionflower. They are also used in tinctures and herbal capsules.

Cautions:
May cause drowsiness—avoid before driving or operating machinery. Not recommended during pregnancy. May interact with sedatives, alcohol, or CNS-depressant medications. Use in moderation.
