Description

Kelp Powder
Scientific Name: Ascophyllum nodosum / Laminaria digitata (species may vary)

Mineral-rich, oceanic, and deeply nourishing, kelp powder is made from dried and finely milled seaweed harvested from cold, clean coastal waters. Long used in coastal food traditions and modern nutritional systems, kelp is especially known for its natural iodine content and trace minerals.

Plant Description:
Kelp is a large brown seaweed (marine algae) in the order Laminariales, found in nutrient-rich ocean waters, particularly in the North Atlantic and North Pacific. It forms underwater forests and is harvested, washed, dried, and ground into a fine green-brown powder.

Traditional Uses:
Kelp has been consumed for centuries in coastal Asian, Celtic, and Scandinavian diets. It has traditionally been used as a food source, seasoning, and mineral supplement. In Japanese cuisine, kelp (kombu) is commonly used in broths and soups.

Benefits:

  • Naturally rich in iodine for thyroid support in dietary use
  • Contains trace minerals including magnesium, potassium, and calcium
  • Supports overall mineral nutrition in food-based traditions
  • Source of dietary fiber and marine polysaccharides
  • Traditionally used in coastal diets for vitality and nourishment
  • May support metabolic function through iodine content
  • Common ingredient in Asian culinary traditions

Preparation Suggestions:
Kelp powder can be added to soups, broths, smoothies, or seasoning blends. A typical serving is a small pinch to ¼ teaspoon due to its concentrated mineral content. It is commonly used in broths, especially in Asian-style cooking.

Cautions:
High in iodine—excess intake may affect thyroid function. Use caution if you have thyroid disorders or are taking thyroid medication. Avoid overconsumption and consult a healthcare provider if needed.
