Description

Kudzu Root
Scientific Name: Pueraria lobata

Earthy, mildly sweet, and deeply traditional, kudzu root is a fast-growing climbing vine long used in East Asian herbal systems. Harvested from the starchy root of Pueraria lobata, it is valued in traditional preparations for its cooling and balancing properties.

Plant Description:
Kudzu is a perennial vine in the Fabaceae (legume) family, native to East Asia and now naturalized in parts of the United States. It grows aggressively, producing large trifoliate leaves, purple flowers, and thick, starchy roots that are harvested and dried for herbal use.

Traditional Uses:
Kudzu root has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine under the name “Ge Gen.” It has traditionally been prepared as a powder, tea, or cooked food ingredient. It is often included in formulas for cooling, digestive, and seasonal balance support.

Benefits:

  • Cooling herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine
  • May support muscle relaxation in traditional use

Preparation Suggestions:
Kudzu root powder is commonly mixed into warm water, soups, or broths. It is also used as a thickening agent in cooking due to its starch content. A typical serving is ½–1 teaspoon. It can be cooked into porridge or herbal drinks.
