Description

Mugwort
Scientific Name: Artemisia vulgaris

Aromatic, earthy, and long regarded as a mystical and protective herb, mugwort is a traditional botanical known for its bitter, warming qualities and its deep roots in European, Asian, and Indigenous herbal practices. Harvested from the aerial parts of Artemisia vulgaris, this resilient plant has been used for centuries in both wellness and ritual traditions, often associated with intuition, dreaming, and digestive comfort.

Plant Description:
Mugwort is a hardy perennial herb in the Asteraceae family, native to Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa, and now naturalized across North America. It grows tall with deeply lobed, dark green leaves that are silvery-white on the underside. The plant produces small reddish or yellowish flower clusters in late summer and has a distinct aromatic, slightly bitter scent.

Traditional Uses:
Mugwort has a rich history in traditional Chinese medicine, European herbalism, and Indigenous practices. It has been used to support digestion, ease occasional bloating, and promote menstrual comfort. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is famously used in moxibustion (burning dried mugwort near the skin) to support energy flow. In European folk traditions, it was also associated with dreaming practices and protective rituals.

Benefits:

  • Traditionally supports digestive comfort and ease of bloating
  • May help support menstrual cycle balance and comfort
  • Encourages relaxation and grounding
  • Historically used to support vivid dreaming practices
  • Bitter compounds may stimulate digestive secretions
  • Traditionally used in warming and circulatory herbal practices
  • Supports seasonal energetic balance in folk traditions

Preparation Suggestions:
Mugwort is commonly prepared as a tea, tincture, or smoke blend. For tea, steep 1 teaspoon of dried herb in hot water for 5–10 minutes. Due to its bitter flavor, it is often blended with milder herbs such as peppermint or lemon balm. It is also used externally in traditional practices such as moxibustion or herbal steams.

Cautions:
Mugwort may stimulate uterine activity and should be avoided during pregnancy. It may also cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to plants in the Asteraceae family (such as ragweed or chamomile). Use with caution and in moderation, and consult a healthcare professional if you have medical conditions or are taking medications.
